Every November the same question turns up in Swindon: can we board a bit of the loft so the Christmas decorations have somewhere sensible to live?
Yes — if you treat it as light storage. No — if you planned to park a wardrobe up there and call it "boarding".
What loft boarding is for
Boards give you a firm place to stand and a firm place for light boxes. They sit on the joists so the mineral wool between them can stay lofted up and do its job.
They are not a licence to fill the roof space with heavy furniture. Crush the insulation and you pay for it every winter in heat that escapes through the ceiling. Overload the joists and you invent a different problem.
Light decoration boxes. Soft empty luggage. Small, manageable loads. That is the job.
Before you start
Have a proper look with a good light:
- Joists — timber in decent condition, no soft or wet patches.
- Existing boards — full walkway, random scrap planks, or nothing at all.
- Insulation depth — still springy, or already flattened by last year's "temporary" pile.
- Services — cables and pipes you must not stand on or trap under new boards.
- Vents — eaves ventilation left clear, not buried under packaging.
Anything that looks structural, rotten, or wet belongs with a qualified professional. I will not guess at that.
Working safely in the loft
Walk on joists or boards only. The space between is insulation and the back of the ceiling. One misplaced foot and you decorate the landing.
Use a temporary board as a walkway until fixed boarding is down. Keep the hatch and ladder steady. I work within a 5m ladder limit and I will not lift over 15kg, so boxes need to be light enough for sensible handling.
If the hatch leaks cold air into the house, sort the hatch as well as the storage. A boarded loft with a draughty hatch is half a job.
Don't squash the loft quilt
Insulation works by trapping air. Boxes sat straight on mineral wool flatten it. Heat then leaves faster than it should.
Boarding for light storage means:
- boards bearing on the joists
- insulation left lofted between them
- boxes on the boards, not on the wool
- ventilation paths at the eaves left open

What I can do in a session
In a Handyman Plus Van booking I can typically measure joist centres, cut and fix a sensible boarded walkway for light boxes, and tidy the approach around the hatch so you are not balancing a crate of tinsel on one knee.
Small bits from van stock typically are not charged. Bigger materials go on the invoice at cost, with a limit on how much I buy in. I do not take rubbish away, do tip runs, or do gardening. Gas is Gas Safe. Electrics follow Electrical Safety First. Structural work goes to a qualified pro.
Three-hour sessions cover Swindon. Full-day bookings reach about a 30-minute radius around Swindon. Rated 4.9 on Google — still not a promise that every loft matches the brochure.
Book it before the boxes come down
