Someone knocks on a Swindon door and says they noticed loose tiles after the storm. They've "got the ladder out anyway". Agree now and they'll sort it before it gets worse.

That pitch shows up every autumn. Trading Standards teams warn about it for a reason.

I'm Ian from Handyman Plus Van. I don't do pitched roofs, and I won't pretend a friendly knock is a survey. This is a plain warning for homeowners who just want the house dry and the doorstep quiet.

Why storms bring cold callers

After named storms and heavy rain, doorstep traders often claim they spotted damage from the road. The pattern National Trading Standards and local councils keep describing is simple: invent urgency, push for same-day work, take cash up front, then "find" more problems once they're up high.

It works because storms make people anxious. A wet patch on the ceiling does the rest.

Red flags on the drive

  • They found you, not the other way round. A free look "while we're in the area" is a classic opener.
  • Same-day pressure. "That roof won't last the night." Real urgency still allows a phone call to your insurer and a second opinion.
  • Cash up front, especially "for materials", especially if they offer a lift to the bank.
  • The job grows. One tile becomes felt, gutters, then a full strip. Trading Standards have published cases where a tiny starter price ballooned into tens of thousands.
  • No solid paperwork. No checkable business address, just a mobile and confidence.

Pressure, cash and no paperwork. Slow down.

What to do instead

  1. Do not agree to roof work on the doorstep.
  2. If you suspect storm damage, contact your insurer first and take clear photos from the ground.
  3. Get at least two or three written quotes from traders you researched yourself.
  4. Check for a real physical address and references you can verify.
  5. Never hand over large sums for work you didn't ask for.

What I can help with (and what I can't)

My own lines: pitched or sloped roofs aren't my job. Flat roofs for me are rubber (EPDM) or fibreglass only — no torch-on felt — and only small patch repairs and re-sealing within ladder reach. I don't work above 5 metres.

After a storm I'm more use on garden gates, fence panels and gutters within reach — make them safe first, rebuild later if needed. I've written a fuller storm damage repairs guide for Swindon if you want a calm walk-round that stays off the tiles.
