A door that will not close cleanly, a lock that needs changing or a cupboard door that hangs crookedly can make a home feel harder work than it should. So, can a handyman repair doors? For many everyday faults, yes — when the job is about adjustment, hinges, locks, catches or related fittings, rather than a full door replacement.

This guide is about what sorts of door jobs suit a handyman visit, including uPVC and composite doors. If your timber door sticks, rubs or will not latch after damp weather, I have already written a step-by-step guide: Door sticking or won't latch? How to fix it step by step. Use that for the timber sticking sequence; use this page for the wider “what can be repaired” question.

What a handyman can typically take on

A capable handyman can typically help with common domestic door faults as part of a planned carpentry or maintenance visit. That includes:

  • loose or worn hinges that need tightening, packing or replacing
  • handles, latches and keeps that need adjusting or renewing
  • cupboard and kitchen doors that sit unevenly or will not close
  • lock changes and hinge replacement on suitable doors
  • garden gates and catches that need adjustment
  • uPVC and composite door adjustment — hinge and keep settings so the door closes and locks smoothly (these doors are not planed like timber)

A door is a moving part of the house. Hinges, fixings, a latch, a frame and often seals, handles or locks all work together. When one part shifts, the result can look more serious than it is. A bedroom door that stops latching may only need hinge screws tightened or a keep moved a little. A cupboard door that clashes may need a careful hinge adjustment rather than a new unit.

External doors need a little more care because weather, security and draughts are part of the picture. Minor adjustments to hinges, handles, locks and catches may be suitable when the door and frame are fundamentally sound. A door that has become difficult to lock should not be forced. The alignment and the lock itself both need checking.

At Handyman Plus Van, door jobs can sit alongside other sensible items on the same list. If you have a loose handle, a cupboard door out of line and a lock that needs changing, grouping them into a 3-hour or full-day session is typically a practical way to get the house back in order.

uPVC and composite doors: adjust, don't plane

Plastic and composite doors do not swell like timber, so they should never be planed. When they drop, rub or stop locking smoothly, the cause is typically hinge adjustment, keeps on the frame, or a multipoint lock that needs attention. Many uPVC and composite doors have adjustable hinges and keeps that can be moved with the right tools.

I adjust uPVC and composite doors often, and I also replace locks and hinges where the door and frame are sound. If the multipoint mechanism itself has failed, or the door leaf is badly distorted, that may need a door or lock specialist rather than a routine maintenance visit. Photos of the hinges, keeps and lock before booking help sort that out early.

When a door needs more than a handyman visit

There are clear limits. A handyman repair is not always the right route where the door is badly damaged, the frame has significant structural movement, or the work has a specialist compliance requirement.

Fire doors are a good example. Their hinges, closers, seals, gaps and ironmongery all play a role in how the door performs. Do not treat a fire door like an ordinary internal door. A competent specialist assessment may be needed, particularly where the door has been altered, damaged or is failing to close correctly.

Likewise, extensive rot in an external timber frame, severe water damage, a badly distorted door, failed sealed units, or a door that has been forced or seriously damaged may call for a specialist installer or a replacement. A repair can be good value when the underlying components are sound. When they are not, repeated small fixes typically become false economy.

Full replacement of external doors or windows is outside the scope of a standard handyman session. If that is what the door needs, I will say so plainly rather than stretch a booking into the wrong type of work.

How to prepare for a door repair visit

You do not need to become a DIY expert first. Notice when the problem happens: does the door catch at the top, bottom or latch side? Has it changed after wet weather? Does the key turn but the door still not open or close properly? Clear photos of the hinges, frame, handle, latch and any visible damage help a lot.

Clear furniture and loose items away from both sides of the doorway before the visit. If you have replacement handles, hinges or locks ready to fit, have them on site and say so in advance. That avoids finding halfway through that a part does not suit the existing door.

Be realistic about finishes. A small timber adjustment may leave an edge needing paint or varnish. If you want that finishing work done in the same session, include it on the original list.

Repair or replace: the sensible call

Repair is typically the sensible choice when the door is sound, the fault is localised and suitable parts are available. It is less disruptive and can extend the life of a well-made door. This is particularly true for internal doors, cupboards, and uPVC or composite doors that only need hinge, keep or lock work.

Replacement becomes more sensible when there is widespread rot, major damage to the core, or an old door that has been altered so many times that it no longer fits or functions properly. A new door is not automatically a quick job either. It typically needs sizing, fitting, hinges, handles, finishing and careful adjustment — and for a full external replacement, a specialist route is usually the right one.

The helpful question is not simply, “Can this be repaired?” It is, “Will this repair give a dependable result for how this door is used?” That is the difference between a quick patch and a job worth doing.
